Ocular prosthetics
The loss of an eye is a problem that affects a person in various ways. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to reconstruct the harmony of the gaze with a functional and well-adapted ocular prosthesis. This allows individuals to lead a life without any additional inconvenience, and in most cases, it restores a confidence that would otherwise be severely diminished.
For over 60 years, our clinic in Barcelona has been providing ocular prostheses for babies, children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly. We have ensured optimal aesthetic results and a rapid adaptation process for hundreds of patients, including those who have just undergone surgery or have other pathologies. We closely follow the latest scientific and technical advancements to advise our patients, if necessary, on the need for consultation with a specialized doctor for treatment and any necessary prosthetic corrections.
The ocular prostheses are made of high-quality polymethyl methacrylate acrylic. With proper care and regular polishing once a year, they can be worn for about 2 years. After this time, it is necessary to consider making a new prosthesis, both for aesthetic and medical reasons (wear of the surface layer). Wearing an excessively old or damaged prosthesis can lead to irreversible injuries to the eye socket. Generally, during the first six months after the operation and placement of the prosthesis, it should be readjusted due to the changes it produces in the eye socket.
Facial prosthetics
When facial disfigurement occurs, we offer specialized services to restore facial symmetry and normalize a patient’s appearance. Our facial epithesis services replace lost facial tissue and reconstruct the absent part.
The prostheses are made of silicone material and colored with natural pigments.
Children prosthetics
Our ocular prosthesis provide a natural and realistic artificial eye and are specially designed for babies and children of all ages, in which we are specialists, as the approach and measurement process differ significantly from that of adults. Although the loss of an eye is traumatic, children adapt easily to the new conditions, understand what has happened, and how the ocular prosthesis will allow them to live life to the fullest. Working with children means collaborating with parents simultaneously and providing compassionate and personalized care to ensure that the prosthesis fits comfortably and looks as natural as possible. Children under 12 years of age need a regular change of the ocular prosthesis once a year, while those under 18 years of age need to change it every 2 years. Continuous lack of use or replacement of the ocular prosthesis can cause facial asymmetry and delay in the growth not only of the eye socket but also of the respective side of the face.
